Capital Campaign

To our prospective donors,

Carlinville Area Hospital Association and Carlinville Area Hospital Foundation work in collaboration to ensure that children and families both now and in the future can be taken care of close to home. Through teamwork and partnership, we will maintain our core purpose of “Excellent Healthcare Close to Home.” This will be accomplished through the continuation of healthcare at Carlinville Area Hospital in a new, state-of-the art facility. Over fifty years have passed since the Hospital was built and we need your help. In 1952, the community raised $400,000 to build our current hospital; that converts to approximately $3 million in today’s dollars. We hope you will join us in our capital campaign and collaborative efforts to build a new, replacement hospital. This is an investment for you and your family’s future which is why we are calling this campaign "Securing a Healthy Future".

Sincerely,

Questions and Answers

Why do we need a new hospital?

Carlinville Area Hospital was built in 1952. The hospital is wearied and not designed for the way healthcare is practiced today. The current building was designed at a time when a hospital’s focus was on providing overnight care for a patient in a hospital bed. The word "outpatient" barely existed. Today, the highest volumes of patients come to the hospital for "outpatient services" and then return to their own home. This creates entirely different needs in terms of the building. We also need a new hospital because of Critical Access Hospital compliance.

What does Critical Access Hospital mean?

Carlinville Area Hospital became a Critical Access Hospital in 2005. This allowed the hospital to receive special reimbursement for services provided to Medicare patients. As part of the process for obtaining this designation, the facility was inspected by the State to see if the building complied with the Life Safety Code. As one might expect, standards today are much different than when our hospital was first constructed and numerous facility infrastructure concerns were identified. They ranged from items that required the hardware on a door to be changed to replacing the heating ventilating and air-conditioning systems.

What will the new hospital cost?

The total estimated cost of the project is $27 million. That figure includes construction related costs, purchase of land and new equipment, and related financing costs. The Carlinville Area Hospital Foundation is leading a volunteer effort to raise $3 million to help fund the project. The importance of keeping “Excellent Healthcare Close to Home” cannot be overstated.

How much of my contribution or pledge will be used for the new hospital?

All of it! This campaign is only for the new hospital project.

Will rates go up because of this new hospital?

No, the new hospital project should have no direct relationship to an increase of fees/rates, and it is our intent to remain priced competitively with similar state and national health care facilities.

Does Carlinville Area Hospital receive any tax support?

Carlinville Area Hospital is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization and does not receive any city or county tax support.

What do you plan to do with the current Hospital?

The current Hospital will remain intact until the new hospital is prepared to open its doors. The Board is committed to finding an acceptable use and intends on making sure it is not left as an empty eye sore for the residential area and the community. The Hospital Administration and Board are actively exploring potential acceptable uses for the existing facility and property including returning it to a residential area.

Why won’t the hospital’s charge for services be enough to pay for the new facility?

As a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit organization, the hospital must underwrite financial losses for many services. Contribution dollars for this project will be used to help build and expand needed services that otherwise could not be offered; no donations will be used for operational purposes. In order to build the new hospital immediately, construction costs for the project will necessitate financial help from the communities we serve.

In addition to cash gifts, what are other ways to give to the new hospital project?
